Tony Muomagor Against Change Of Varsity Name To Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu

By Mazi Odera

Following the All Progressive Congress, Anambra State chapter rejection of change of Anambra State University's name to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, which was demonsatrated by Hon. Tony Muonagor opposition to it in the House of Assembly, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Peter Obi on Media & Publicity, Valentine Obienyem has decried what he called APC's penchant for opposing everything done by a non APC – led government. Obienyem counseled the APC that there should be limits to politicking even in election season.

'A tragedy happens in Anambra State and even before credible, first hand witnesses have come up with a report, a flippant Lai Mohammed from aLagos or Abuja base is already pontificating and laying blames on a matter he knows nothing about. That is very indecent and unhealthy' he submitted.

Reacting to the APC's stance on the change of name announced by Governor Obi last weekend, the media aide appealed to the opposition party to reconsider their opposition, arguing that the APC alone cannot reject what Anambra citizens and Nigerians have hailed as a good gesture from Governor Peter Obi.

Obienyem lamented that the APC was introducing a dangerous species of opposition, cautioning that when a political party would rush to oppose every policy because it emanated from a rival party in government, that opposition is clearly out for the destabilization of the State. He recalled that every action taken by the Governor to immortalize the memory and legacy of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu has continued to receive commendation from all quarters except the APC.

'I've followed the APC's, that is, the south – west ACN bloc of the APC, and noticed the way and manner they revere Yoruba eminent persons dead or alive. Even recently, late Lt Col Adekunle Fajuyi was honoured. You wonder then why moves by Igbos to honour their own should be opposed and politicized. Yet, before their very eyes, Ojukwu was given a state burial reserved only for outstanding national heroes.'

Obienyem said it was pitiable that in the Anambra House of Assembly the only member opposing the honour done Ojukwu by the people of the State was an APC member, Tony Muonagor. He said it was pitiable of Honourable Muonagor to accept the immortalization of Yorubas by the APC only to stand up to deride the immortalization of a Nigerian hero of Igbo extraction. 'I only hope Anambra people are taking note of those who would soon come around to ask for their votes.'"
