UN Committee against Torture to review Mozambique, Uzbekistan, Poland, Latvia, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Portugal, Andorra, Kyrgyzstan

GENEVA, Switzerland, October 24, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The UN Committee against Torture (CAT) is meeting in Geneva from 28 October to 22 November to review the following countries:

Mozambique (28-29 Oct); Uzbekistan (29-30 Oct): Poland (30-31 Oct);

Latvia (31 Oct-1 Nov); Belgium (5-6 Nov); Burkina Faso (6-7 Nov); Portugal (7-8 Nov)

Andorra (11-12 Nov); Kyrgyzstan (12-13 Nov)

The above are among the 154 States parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. As States parties, they are required to undergo regular reviews by the Committee on how they are implementing the Convention.


The Committee, which is composed of 10 independent experts, will engage in dialogues with the respective government delegations at Palais Wilson. The public meetings, which begin at 10:00 and 15:00 Geneva time, will be webcast live and can be viewed here: http://www.treatybodywebcast.org/.


A press conference is tentatively scheduled for Friday 22 November at 14:00 at Palais des Nations in Geneva..
