Awka, capital of Anambra State, in the last two months, has been celebrating improvement in the area of electricity supply following the test run of a new transmission provided by the Federal Government at the Agu-Awka sub station.

This development has also reduced the load being carried by the old Nibo power station, which supplies electricity to the capital territory to the advantage of nearby towns like Nibo, Amawbia, Nise and Mbaukwu.

Hoteliers, food vendors and artisans, who own beauty saloons, have been commending the Federal Government over this development, urging the Minister for Power to do more in that regard.

According to the Chairman, Awka Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture, Ndubuisi Nwobu, who owns Geogold Hotel, Awka, the power situation in Awka has improved tremendously.

Speaking in an interview, Nwobu said: “I can say that there has been some improvement. There is some improvement. But it could be better than this. It could be better than this”.“

He however maintained that though there is improved power supply in the area presently, the Federal Government should rehabilitate the Oji River Power Station to ensure that the current situation is improved upon and sustained.

Also speaking the monarch of Awka, Obi Eze-Uzu Gibson Nwosu, stressed that in the last three weeks or so, he learnt that a mobile sub-station was brought to the Agu Awka area to decongest the Nibo power station.

He stressed that to a large extent, within that period, power supply has improved tremendously in that area, from the Millennium Industry into the town.

This, he added, would go a long way in sustaining businesses, especially the small-scale entrepreneurs like barbers, welders, the vulcanizers among others, as well as being a boost to big businesses.
