Miss Rivers, Two Beauty Queens Set To Partner With FIDA On Advocacy For The Girl Child And Peace In Rivers

In a bid to fight for and advance the course of the girl child in the country, winner of Miss Rivers state beauty pageant in company of two other beauty queens have staked shared integrity and is set to partner with the Federation of Women Lawyers of Nigeria, (FIDA) to advocate for the girl child.

Miss Rivers State, Abaye Onyekachukwu Victoria; Miss Port Harcourt Main Town, Aguma Confidence Eberechi and Queen of Tourism Nigeria, Gold Nwawam Sorbarihave all expressed readiness to kick start an advocacy against child marriage, rape, child trafficking and to enthrone peace in Rivers state.

This declaration was made when the three beauty queens led by Miss Rivers state paid an advocacy visit on the chairperson of FIDA Rivers state branch at her office in Port Harcourt.

Making her remark, Miss Rivers state, Abaye Onyekachukwu Victoria said the visit was imperative considering that the Federation of Women Lawyers of Nigeria share similar objective as provided by the post crowning obligation of the queens. She said they hope to use their campaign to preach peace in Rivers state which among other things is one of the things the crown symbolizes.

“We are encouraged to visit here to identify with FIDA and seek for ways to partner with them on this course for the girl child because we appreciate what they are doing for the voiceless and suppressed in the society” she said.

Speaking further she said, “forced and child marriages entrap women and young girls in relationships that deprive them of their basic human rights and constitutes a human rights violation in itself”. According to her it also have severe psychological, emotional, medical, financial, and legal consequences, which must be obliterated from our system to save the girl child through this partnership, massive enlightenment among others.

In her remark, the Chairperson of Federation of Women Lawyers of Nigeria, (FIDA) Rivers state Branch, Mrs. Florence Itamunoala said she is pleased with the visit, observing that the queens quest to have a partnership with FIDA is an eloquent testimony that they are focus and have vision ahead.

She emphasized the need to expunge Section 29(4b) of the Nigeria constitution that said once you are married, you are an adult saying,” we must stop the issue of a child carrying a child in her tummy in this country, it is inhuman and only serve the self seeking interest of a few against the girl child”.

On rape she described it as social menace which must be tackled by relevant authorities, demanding that all hands must be on deck to address it. Though she admitted that body had challenges culminating from finance, glut of legal battles, threats etc, she however assured that the body will continue to do its bit to fight for the indigent and violated.

Mrs. Itamunoala thanked the delegation for coming and assured them that FIDA Rivers state branch will partner with them to take the campaign to a new and accomplished level.
