Sultan urges Muslim faithful to look out for new Moon on Wednesday

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, on Tuesday urged Muslim faithful to look out for the new Moon of Shawwal , 1434 AH, on Wednesday across the country.

This is contained in a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Wali, the Chairman, Advisory committee on Religious Affairs, Sokoto Sultanate Council, Sokoto State.

According to the statement, Wednesday, Aug.7, which is equivalent to the 29th day of Ramadan, 1434 AH, shall be the day to look out for the new Moon of Shawwal.

'Muslims are therefore requested to look out for the new moon and report its sighting to the sighting district or village head for onward communication to the Sultan,'' it stated.

The statement gave the following telephone numbers which could be used to report the sighting of the new moon: 0803-715-7100; 0803-041-3534; 0803-507-3872; 0803-596-5322; 0803-314-3866 and 0803-965-5997.

The new moon is sighted on Wednesday, Muslims in the country would join their colleagues across the world to celebrate the Sallah (Eid-el-Fitr) on Thursday.

However, if the new moon is not sighted on Wednesday, Muslims will have to fast on Thursday, and Sallah will be celebrated on Friday.  (NAN)
