Muslims asked to sight new Ramadan moon Monday

MOSLEM faithful all over Nigeria have been urged to look for the new crescent of Ramadan on Monday, July 8, 2013 (today),, which corresponds to 29th day of Sha'ban, 1434AH.

In a statement signed by the Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede , in Ilorin on Sunday, the body said members of its National Moon Sighting Committee have been deployed with appropriate gadgets to various parts of the country for easy sighting of the moon.

The release also said that other individuals who are able to sight the crescent are requested to contact, through appropriate authorities, either President General of the NSCIA and the Sultan of Sokoto on 0803 647 0422 and other members of the council.

'Where the authorities are satisfied that the crescent has been duly sighted, the President General and the Sultan of Sokoto would announce the commencement of the fast. However, if the crescent is not sighted on Monday (today), the Tarawih prayer should be observed on Tuesday July 9, 2013, for the commencement of Ramadan on the July 10, 2013, whether or not it is sighted on that Tuesday', it said.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Supreme Court has called on all Muslims in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to sight the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan on Monday evening, Shaaban 29, 1434AH, corresponding to July 8, 2013.
In an announcement made Sunday morning, the Supreme Court also called on whoever sees the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan by naked eyes or through binoculars to report to the nearest court and register his testimony, or report to the authority of the region’s governorate if there is no judge in the area where he sighted the crescent.

The Court called on capable crescent observers to join the committees formed in the provinces for this purpose.
