NSF 2014: Team Cross River may face crisis

By The Citizen

With less than a year to the National Sports Festival holding in Calabar, Cross River state in 2014, Team Cross River is in crisis over what they claimed is discriminatory attitude of the state sports council and the sports ministry.

Sources close to the state sports' council revealed that team events are being neglected at the expense of individual sports.

'Team events are suffering here, we are being neglected. Individual sports are paid three times higher than what we are paid. Team events are only allowed to recruit four athletes which is grossly inadequate, yet they want us to win our various events,' the source complained.

He added that, 'basketball, volleyball, handball and football need more than four players to beef up their team to dream of winning any medal during the festival. We tried to convince the director and the commissioner for sports on the need to recruit more athletes but they refused, yet they are aiming for gold in the festival,' he stressed.
