Rivers Government has said that its Free Healthcare Medical Programme (FHMP) covers the treatment of all diseases and illnesses, including cancer, for those who registered for it.

Dr Sampson Parker, the state Commissioner for Health, said this in Port Harcourt on Wednesday at a press briefing ahead of the State Council on Health meeting scheduled for May 16 and 17.

''The free health programme is on every disease and it is universal; people should register for the programme.

“You only have to show evidence of tax payment; you don't register because you are ill.''

He noted that most people registered for the programme when they were sick and advisedĀ  residents to pay their tax and register for the programme.

Parker, however, said that the state government had yet to acquire radiotherapy facility for cancer treatment in the state.

He said that the 11th State Council on Health meeting with theĀ  theme: ''Achieving results in health” would be declared open by Gov Chibuike Amaechi.

Parker said the meeting would be a self-assessment of what the country/state had done well or otherwise in the health sector.

He said that the programme, which would x-ray the issue of human resources in the health sector, would involve both private and public stakeholders.
