INEC earmarks N50 million for FCT council elections

Abuja Thu. Feb. 18, 2010 African Examiner -The Independent National Electoral

Commission (INEC), has said it will deploy 1,842 personnel for the April 10 council election

in the FCT.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for FCT, Dr Steven Manya, told newsmen in

Abuja that 614 polling units had been designated for the election adding that three

officials would be assigned to each unit.
Dr. Manta disclosed that 50 million naira had been earmarked for the conduct of the

election, excluding the cost of engaging additional personnel from the states.

He said voters register had been displayed at all polling units across the 62 registration

areas to avail voters the opportunity to cross-check their names explaining that the

commission will soon come up with a clean copy of the register, which would be

subsequently displayed at all polling units.
He identified voters apathy as the greatest challenge confronting elections in the FCT.

Manya said that the commission would ensure that many obvious electoral hitches in the

FCT would be addressed in order to provide a level playing ground for all parties.
