BERLIN, Germany, February 19, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Today the Federal Government adopted two mandates on a German contribution to the EU training mission in Mali and on the support of the African led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA) backed by the UN Security Council. These draft mandates will now be submitted to parliament for approval.

Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (19 February) on the adoption of the two mandates by the Federal Cabinet:

“We Europeans have a strong interest in preventing a safe haven for international terrorists from emerging in our geographical neighbourhood. We therefore want to support the Africans in their efforts to assume responsibility for security in Mali. This approach is a security policy imperative and, at the same time, the best way to take some of the burden off our partner France.”
