PRESS CONFERENCE WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL ADVISER ON THE PREVENTION OF GENOCIDE

NAIROBI, Kenya, February 14, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng will visit Mombasa to address the workshop of the Kenya National Committee on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and all forms of Discrimination slated from 13-15 February 2013.

During the course of his visit to Nairobi on 11-12 February, the Special Adviser will hold consultations with senior government officials and other actors on the situation in Kenya, particularly on the prevention of inter-communal tensions or violence that if not halted, could escalate to atrocity crimes resembling the 2007-2008 election-related violence.


Mr. Dieng will brief the media along with the Chairperson of the Kenya National Committee, Mr. S.K. Maina and the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, Dr. Ntumba Luaba on 15 February 2013.


The Special Adviser will urge all actors to restrain from violence or incitement to commit violence and adhere to the rule of law during and after the electoral period.

BACKGROUND:


The United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect (the Office) works to advance national, regional and international efforts to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, as well as their incitement.


In line with its partnership with the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, the Office has provided support to the Kenya National Committee on the Prevention of Genocide to organize a pre-election workshop in Mombasa. The workshop will highlight the state's responsibility to protect its populations and the importance of peace-building to prevent the recurrence of inter-communal violence in the country.
