Armed Bandits Strike Again Near Birnin Gwari In Kaduna State

By The Citizen

Less than a week after armed bandits wreaked havoc in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State by sacking a police station and demolishing two banks, another armed attack was launched by heavily armed men in nearby Sabon Layi, a village in the Kakangi district in Birnin Gwari local government area.

The latest attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday as the armed men went on house-to-house raids. A security source told SaharaReporters that an unconfirmed number of people were injured, among them a local government councilor representing the Kakangi ward. The source added that several victims were receiving treatment for various at Jibril Maigwari General Hospital in Birnin Gwari.

One source complained that the local government did not have enough funds to fund a joint security operation. 'The council chairman is powerless because there is not even enough money to even fuel his car,' said the source, who is close to the chairman.

Community leaders in the area had asked the state government to provide backing and logistical support to vigilante groups in the area through the local government. One community leader said they were willing to use traditional charms to curtail the ugly situation. He said, 'The same method was used 12 years ago and it helped to sanitize the thick forest that serves hideout for armed robbers in the area.'
