13 disused aircraft dismantled

By The Citizen

As earlier reported, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Thursday made good its threat to evacuate disused aircraft from the country's airports as it commenced removal of the abandoned airplanes.

The operation began at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos and the exercise is expected to be extended to the Abuja airport.

The abandoned aircraft, 13 in all at the Lagos airport, are expected to be dismantled within the next 10 days.

After the dismantling, the aircraft would be transported to a steel company for recycling into other industrial use.

Fielding questions from reporters yesterday at the dismantling site, one of the contractors handling the project at the Lagos airport, AAYU Steel Mills, said the aircraft would be recycled in Lagos before being transported to the company in Kebbi State.
