The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Ernest Ndukwe urged consumers not to be afraid of base stations situated at their living areas, "since they are to enhance telecommunications signals".

"The height is just for wider coverage, they don't have any radiating characteristics", he said.

"If these base stations are not erected near your area, you will not have signal, you will have drop calls and you will be the one complaining," he said.

The NCC has also reassured telecommunications consumers in the country that there are no health hazards associated with the use of mobile phones.

Mr Ndukwe, gave the assurance in Lagos during the 51st NCC Telecomms Consumers Parliament.

Ndukwe said that there were about 4 billion mobile phone users in the world today and Nigeria was among the users and in some of theses countries handsets have been used for the past 30 years and no effects have been recorded.

He stated that the NCC would continue to conduct research and once there is any negative findings, the commission would alert the consumers.
