Pensioners seek govts' intervention in 2013

By The Citizen

Lagos-PENSIONERS have again pleaded with government at all levels to see to their plight this year and ensure that they got their pensions paid promptly.

Thousands of the aged senior citizens had late last year taken to the streets to protest against various issues such as delayed pension payment, underpayment, non-payment of arrears and gratuity, frequent screening exercises of pensioners by government which cause them to die untimely, among others.

Some pensioners who spoke to Vanguard, said it was high time the government put a stop to  problems militating against the seamless payment of pensions and other entitlements.
According to Mr. Ben Akagwe, the frequent screening exercises which were carried out last year has not yielded any result in marking out the ghost pensioners.

One of the pensioners, Mr. Emmanuel Obioma an ex-military officer, said after each screening exercise, new problems cropped up.
