The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Maitama, Abuja was partially damaged by fire on Monday.

The   National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Spokesperson Yushau Shuaib,  who confirmed the incident, said the fire only affected office of the commission's director of registry. He added that there were no causalities in the incident.

Shuaib said the cause of the fire was yet to be known.

Shuaib added that the quick and timely response of the fire-fighters prevented the inferno from claiming any casualties and spreading to other offices within the premises.

A team of mobile and conventional policemen quickly cordoned off the area as the emergency response team deployed in the area struggled to quench the fire.

'It was a hectic task but our men put up a spirited effort to put off the fire after we received a distress call. It was a major incident, but we thank God there were no casualties,' said a rescue team officer at the scene of the incident, who declined to be mentioned.
