How Does My Memory Work?

By Daily Graphic

Memory is the ability to store things that you experience and learn, ready for use in the future. Some things are remembered easily, such as dramatic events in our life. However, more ordinary things need to be rehearsed in the mind several times before they 'stick'.

There are three different ways of storing memory. Sensory memory, which is very brief, tells you what is happening around you and allows you to move without bumping into things.

Short term memory, lasts for only about 30 seconds and allows you to remember a phone number and dial it, but after a minute or so it will vanish.

Finally, long-term memory, enables you to remember things that you have carefully memorised and learned.
