DELTA VARSITY ASUU THREATENS STRIKE OVER ABANDONED PROJECTS, TAX

UGHELLI- ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Delta State University, Abraka Chapter, Wednesday, decried the abandonment of capital projects on the three campuses of the university.

Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Emmanuel Mordi, who addressed newsmen on the deliberations of the union's congress in Abraka, lamented that government was abando-ning its responsibility towards the infrastructural development of the institution.

He added that the abandonment of the projects had brought much burden on host commu-nities, thereby treating the oil-rich state's university as a community-funded institution.

Mordi said the pressure on the university's administration to imple-ment an 'obnoxious' tax regime on the October salaries by the state Board of Internal Revenue was in bad faith.

He said: 'The board's insistence that a professor should pay a monthly tax of between N92,000 and N114,000 out of his meagre monthly salary of N450,000.

'Congress urged the Visitor to intervene decisively to avert the loo-ming industrial tsunami.' which can destroy all that we had laboured for in the last 20 years. Congress resolved to take any measure it deems appropriate to resist and reject any unilateral implementation of the new tax regime by the state government.'
