Dr Jean Ping, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, on Monday expressed shock over last week's bomb and gun attacks carried out by terrorists in Damaturu.

A statement issued by the Information and Communications Department of the Commission said Ping was disturbed by the incident, which it described as one of the bloodiest terrorist acts witnessed in the country to date.

``The Chairperson condemns in the strongest terms these mindless criminal acts and senseless violence, which cannot be justified under any circumstances.''

Ping expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Nigeria, and wished those wounded a speedy recovery.

He reaffirmed the AU's total rejection of terrorism, and its determination to combat the scourge in accordance with the relevant AU and international instruments.

Ping, therefore, urged the government to spare no efforts in bringing those responsible for the horrific attacks to justice.
