No Actress Can Intimidate Me

Q: Tell us about yourself?
A: My name is Amaka Otuberu, from Anambra State. I am an actress.

Q: Can you tell us some of the films you've featured in?
A: Key of Happiness, Lonely Life, House of A Slave, Evil Queen and a lot of soap operas.

Q: In all, how many jobs have you done?
A: I have done about 15 films.

Q: How has the experience been?
A: It wasn't easy at first, but everything has been fine for the past four years that I have been into it.

Q: When did you choose to go into acting and why?
A: I chose to go into acting when I was in primary school. In those days, myself and my colleagues featured in two programmes on Delta State Television, and because I found it interesting, I decided to continue doing it.

Q: Apart from the beautiful face, do you think you've got what it takes to be an actress?
A: I guess yes because I'm also intelligent, talented and versatile.

Q: How prepared are you to challenge the likes of Ini Edo, Oge Okoye and Mercy Johnson for roles?
A: With God, I believe all things are possible. I'm confident. I can challenge them to get any movie role.

Q: Do you subscribe to the notion that most Nollywood actors have been stereotyped?
A: I don't think it is true. It may be in the past anyway, but these days, we have versatile actors and actresses in the industry and I don't think any of them has been stereotyped.

Q: How flexible are you as an actress?
A: I'm very flexible. I believe I can play any role given to me perfectly.

Q: Who are your role models in the industry?
A: I love Genevieve.

Q: Why?
A: I like everything about her. I like the way she acts, speaks and the way she presents herself.

Q: What do you understand by Nollywood?
A: Nollywood is Nigerian made (Nigerian movie industry) which presents Nigerian movies for the satisfaction of Nigerian people.

Q: It's assumed that Nollywood is number three in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood, how true do you think this is?
A: I think it is the absolute truth because I know Nigerian films are everywhere in the world and I guess that (sales) is the yardstick they use in rating the movie industry.

Q: What are your aspirations in this profession?
A: I want to get to the peak. I want to give my best and gain popularity.

Q: What would you say about sexual harassment in Nollywood?
A: I can't say anything about it because I haven't experienced it before.

Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A: I don't want to be a wayward actress. I want to be a God-fearing actress who is known for honesty and transparency.

Q: Why do actresses find it difficult to keep a stable relationship?
A: I don't think the fault is always from these actresses because we all know some men are too jealous. In my own case, I will make my boyfriend understand the nature of my job. If that is done, then we can have a steady relationship. I guess the reason is because most of them do allow stardom get into their heads. They find it difficult managing stardom. That's why they start misbehaving with their boyfriends or husbands after having the fame and money.

Q: What should we be expecting from you in the next couple of years?
A: I want to still be myself and always hold my head high.
