UNIBEN ASUU REJECTS NEW VISITATION PANEL

By NBF News

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) University of Benin branch has said that it was against the setting up of a new visitation panel to the university. It insisted that there was a subsisting report of an earlier visitation panel on the university for the period 2004-2009.

The union has therefore called for the release of the government white paper on the report of that panel, chaired by Professor Peter Okebukola, which came up with 208 recommendations to the government through the then minister of education, Dr Sam Egwu.

Signed by its factional chairman, Dr Emmanuel Irabor and Secretary Mr. Henry Akinnibosun, the union called on the Federal Government to rather act on the subsisting report of the existing visitation panel

It wants the President to disband the panel recently set up for other universities in the country because such a move amounts to unnecessary duplication of efforts and wastage of tax payers' money in an era of scare public funds. The union recalled how the presidency through the Federal Ministry of Education recently constituted visitation panels to the over 40 public universities in the country as part of efforts to reposition them.
