LONG QUEUES IN ASABA AS VOTERS RUSH TO BEAT DEADLINE

By NBF News

AS the two-week period announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the registration of voters draws nearer, many eligible voters were seen, yesterday, struggling to beat the deadline in Asaba, Delta State. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha, has mobilised students of higher institutions across the state for the register.

As a result of the rush, long queues were noticed at most of the centres visited in Asaba and environs, yesterday, afternoon. Some of them who spoke to Vanguard, said they do not want to take chances, irrespective of whether the time would be extended or not.

Investigation showed that apart from the persons, who had been reporting at the various centres for registration and unable to register either due to technical hitches or that they were waiting for their turn, others, who were lukewarm initially about the exercise had joined the queue.

The state Education Commissioner at  an interactive session with student leaders in Asaba,  presented them with campaign awareness posters and urged them to deliver the posters to their various campuses. He charged the students to register so as to vote 'and then retain the government that will sustain prompt payment of bursary and scholarship.'
