I ALMOST DISBANDED SHARKS, DOLPHINS – AMAECHI

By NBF News

Gov. Amaechi
Rivers State Chief Executive, Chibuike Amaechi, has spectacularly revealed that he came very close to disbanding either of the two Nigeria Premier League (NPL) clubs, Sharks and Dolphins.

Both clubs are sponsored by the Rivers State Government and owing to the huge financial demands of the competitions they enter for annually, several 'stakeholders' called for the disbandment of, at least, one of them. Governor Amaechi, however, revealed that it was not an option he was willing to consider.

'I received advice to collapse the two teams, but I said no. It is not easy but we are determined to encourage the two clubs in both the league and the cup,' Governor Amaechi told SuperSport.com. The Governor also went down memory, eulogizing the qualities of great Sharks team of yore.

'I recall my days as a youngster when we used to go to the old temporary stadium in Port Harcourt to watch great heroes like Dombaraye, Richard Owubokiri, and Hamilton Green. It was great entertainment as we were usually thoroughly entertained. Those days, we could not even afford money for gate fees and usually sneaked into the stadium or watched from tree tops. That was how much our love for the team was,' he said.

The governor, who recently splashed cash and car gifts on players, officials and supporters of Sharks FC, also charged members of the Dolphins family to win things to attract similar rewards.

'I am challenging Dolphins to do what Sharks did and they will also be rewarded,' Governor Amaechi promised.

Dolphins are currently 2nd of the NPL table, one point off the leader, Sunshine Stars while Sharks 8th on the log with 12 points having played a game fewer than the leaders.
