GUN HELD TO HEAD OF SHOPKEEPER AND BABY IN BURY RAID

The incident was captured on CCTV, as the BBC's Nick Ravenscroft explains

Robbers who threatened a shopkeeper with a gun and a meat cleaver as he held his baby daughter in his arms were “beneath contempt”, police have said.

Two masked men entered Gough News on Windsor Road, Bury, on Tuesday.

One of the robbers pointed a cocked gun at the shopkeeper and his 15-month-old daughter while demanding money.

They also threatened his wife, who was behind the counter, before stealing cigarettes and cash from the till.

'Traumatic memories'
Greater Manchester Police said the robbery on Tuesday left the victims extremely shaken but all three were physically unharmed.

Det Con Stephen Gaskell, of Bury CID, said: “To threaten a man while he held a young child in his arms is beneath contempt.

“The only saving grace is that she will be too young to remember this. However, her parents will not be so lucky – it will have left an indelible impression on them.”

He added: “These robbers are clearly desperate and don't shy away from using or threatening real violence.”
