Ogunbo said, 'Hydrocephalus is a condition where there is increased amount of brain fluid. This leads to enlargement of the head of the baby. This can happen soon after birth or later in infancy. The main effect of hydrocephalus in children is brain damage. The young developing brain is compressed and damaged by the pressure due to the large amount of brain fluid. This can then lead to blindness, deafness, paralysis, poor development and death, if not treated.'

He said many people especially those in government, do not know about hydrocephalus nor appreciate its incidence and the devastation it causes in families, and called for concerted efforts between governments and the public to tackle the growing but silent menace.
