What Bill Clinton Really Ate In The White House

Bill Clinton left his cheeseburger cravings to the experts at McDonald's during his time as commander-in-chief.

Former White House chef John Moeller insists the kitchen never whipped up the fatty patties Clinton famously had a penchant for during his presidency, before going vegan after his 2010 heart surgery.

“We did not make cheeseburgers, ever — we'd have a picnic on the south grounds once in a while, but that's about it,” Moeller told Page Six at a party celebrating the limited “Presidential Palates” menu at Delmonico's, which he co-created.

Chicken enchiladas, salmon, snapper and a “pretty healthy” version of chicken pot pie were often on the menu for the Clinton family. But if Moeller were to cook for Hillary Clinton as president, the first dish he'd make would be lamb: “They love rack of lamb.”

As for the Bush taste buds — Moeller worked for both Bush administrations — George W. followed in his father's famous broccoli-loathing footsteps. “George W. Bush wasn't a big favorite of vegetables sometimes — he would like to kind of abstain a little bit,” Moeller said.

As Moeller recalled, one night the former president was eating by himself and, “I decided to kind of 'man up ' the meal a little bit — so I made chicken fried steak, some mashed potatoes and corn. And the butler took it out to him and comes back and he's laughing … He put the plate in front of [the president] and he looked at it and said, 'There's nothing green on the plate — I like it.’”

The special menu — which features creations from Chef Moeller as well as dishes served at the historic restaurant to past presidents from Thomas Jefferson to John F. Kennedy — is available from Nov. 1-8.
