Ronaldo Beats Messi, Hits 200 Million Social Media Followers

BEVERLY HILLS, February 24, (THEWILL) – Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first athlete to surpass 200 million followers on social media.

Social media tracking database, Hookit, confirmed that Ronaldo crossed the 200 million threshold on Tuesday, when his combined total hit 200,058,494.

The Real Madrid footballer has 109.7 million followers on Facebook, 49.6 million on Instagram and 40.7 million on Twitter.

His social media following is 64% larger than those of his arch rival, Lionel Messi, who is not on Twitter.

Ronaldo, who averages 135,000 new followers a day, also has more followers than the combined total followers of basketball stars LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, who have a joint 187 million followers.

Ronaldo became the first athlete to cross the 100 million barrier on Facebook in 2014, and has become the third celebrity to cross the 200 million threshold across the three major platforms.

He joins American singer, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift in the 200 million club.
