Burkina Faso: African Youths Calls For President Kafando's Reinstatement

By Ugochukwu Mercy

African youths, under the umbrella of the Young African Leaders Forum (YALF) condemn the recent coup in Burkina Faso and demand that Interim President, Michel Kafando be reinstated into office ahead of the October 11 general election - which is aimed at ushering in a new era of democracy.

As a youth-led continental movement working to promote the social and political development of Africa, the Young African Leaders Forum (YALF) rebukes the organizers of the coup, which started last Wednesday with the arrest of the interim president and prime minister.

Whilst responding to questions, the President of the Young African Leaders Forum, Prince Ifoh, stressed that a power seizure by the presidential guard was actually a major step backward for a country that managed to peacefully oust a long-serving autocrat last October.

He lamented that the coup in Burkina Faso is a clear indication that African nations lack foresight and the capacity to maintain the progressive path towards development.

According to him, it is clear that the will of the Military is not dialogue, but to take power in connection to the party policies of the former regime. Nevertheless, the resistance from the international community will help frustrate their enterprise.

Ifoh, who is the leader of the Pan-African development movement, calls for the reinstatement of the Interim President, Kafando as well as the subsequent release of the Prime Minister, who is under house arrest.

He added that Burkina Faso ought to return to civilian rule and an interim government led by President Michel Kafando should be reinstated to continue its work of preparing for free, fair and credible elections on October 11.
