SON explains restriction on low-grade cement

The Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mr. Joseph Odumodu, has said that its restriction of use of low grade cement-the 32.5MPA was to mitigate problems of building collapse.

He urged manufacturers to commence the production of the high grade 42.5MPA.

Odumodu, who spoke at the   just-concluded public hearing conducted by the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on the Composition and Pigmentation of Cement in the country, Director General of SON, Joseph Odumodu, said the restriction placed on the use of low grade cement was to mitigate the problem of building collapse in the country.

He said the country could not afford to be different on the issue of cement quality, adding that world's progressive countries had since stopped using the low quality 32.5MPA.

The SON boss said his organisation had restricted the use of 32.5MPA low grade and would enforce compliance, saying those who had decided to continue to produce 32.5MPA low grade were doing do so for profiteering.
