Abuja Banks Threaten To Sue Club Owners Over Choice Of Name

By Ali Adoyi

Abuja banks have threatened to sue popular Showbiz guru, Kehinde Adegbite, otherwise known as Mr. Yankee and Abuja number one PR expert, Uyi Ugbebor, for naming a club ' The Bank'.

The duo had on Friday last week announced via a Blackberry message that a new club with the name 'The Bank' would be unveiled in Abuja on march 14.

Yankee, who organizes major shows and events in Nigeria, including the Night of a Thousand Laughs, May D Album Launch, Iyanya's Album Launch and Tuface Abuja show... etc, said the club has been given the name, 'The Bank' because it is universal and acceptable by both him and Uyi who co-own the club as well as perspective patrons.

In a message sent out via BB messenger, Uyi had earlier advised on the need to save money with the new ' The bank'. He said " Do you have 'The BANK' in your city? THE BANK is coming to u soon....save your money"

However, in a swift reaction, some branch Managers in Abuja have condemned the club name, saying that banks must not be associated with clubs that are more secular. A bank Manager who spoke with newsmen but preferred anonymity said a meeting was held last Saturday, and the Managers have resolved to sue both the Chairman and the MD of 'The Bank' (club).

Reiterating further, the aggrieved Bank Manager said, "How can anyone name his club 'The Bank'. These two are poles apart. It's just like putting light and darkness in the same place. We do serious business as bankers. We do not want to identify with any club. We have resolved that should they insist on the name, we will go to court. Our lawyers are currently drafting a letter which we will send to the club owners.

Report further revealed that the multimillion Naira controversial club is located at Wuse 2, Abuja.
