The Pro Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Dr Emma Enemuo, on Wednesday described as laudable the various infrastructural development projects by the university management.

Enemuo made the commendation at the commissioning of the FUTO Guest House on the campus in Owerri.

He commended the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chigozie Asiabaka, and his management team for being frugal with university funds which has enabled him to commence and complete the projects.

'This is a land mark event. It is particularly important as it marks the beginning of a lot of things and an end of wastage of funds,' he said.

Enemuo, who is also the Chairman of the Governing Board of the university, said the board would always support the good work of the management team.

'There is a need to support someone who is doing the right thing,' he said.

Speaking earlier, the vice chancellor said the guest house was for the common good of all as the university had spent a lot of money on the accommodation of its guests.

He thanked the board for the unalloyed support, adding that the vision was to make the university stand at par with others outside the country.

Earlier, the wife of the vice chancellor and Acting Director of the Centre for Women, Gender and Development Studies, Dr Ihuoma Asiabaka, observed that the university had lodged its guests in hotels or rented apartments since 1980.

She said this had caused the university huge sums of money.

She noted that the guest house would provide accommodation, a place of relaxation, recreation and refreshment for members of staff and a source of revenue for the university as well as employment for the people.

Asiabaka pleaded for the patronage of the university community by making room reservations for external examiners, guests from federal and state ministries and other agencies.

She also said the hall could be used for conferences, workshops, seminars and committee meetings.

The guest house comprises of 20 rooms, a banquet hall, a restaurant, a mini bar, cybercafé, IT/ security gadgets and is furnished with modern electronics.
