Akobundu urges S/East politicians to invest in PDP ahead of 2015

The Vice Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), South East, Chief Austin Akobundu, has advised the Igbo to invest in the party ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Akobundu, who gave the advice in Umuahia on Monday in an interview, said the future of the zone was better secured in the PDP than in any other political party.

“The people of the South East should trust and invest in the PDP because the party has not failed them and will not fail them in 2015,'' he said.

Akobundu noted that the Igbo had enjoyed `numerous' democracy dividends from the federal government and urged them to shun the antics of the opposition ahead of the 2015 general elections.

“The upgrading of Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu; Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri and the reconstruction of the Port Harcourt-Enugu expressway and the second Niger Bridge were made by the leadership of the party.

“The appointments of our sons and daughters into key position were also made by the leadership of the PDP,'' he said.

On the plan by some PDP senators to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akobundu said there was no cause for worry since the type of democracy practised in Nigeria allowed politicians to make such movements.

“Nigeria operates a multi-party democracy and everybody has a choice to make on the party he or she intends to pursue his political ambition.

“The concern of PDP for now is to solidify the platform for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan and other deserving governors and legislators,'' he said.

On the performances of PDP governors in the zone, Akobundu, who gave an example with Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia, described the governor as the “true administrative ambassador'' of PDP in the South East.

He said Orji had performed excellently well in many sectors, adding that the PDP was proud of him not only in the South East zone but across the country.

“The massive crowds that throng venues where Gov. Orji attends programmes are clear demonstrations of the people's appreciation and recognition of the excellent jobs being done by him,'' Akobundu said.

He said the party was particularly happy with Orji on his achievements in the areas of human capacity development, security and the provisions of enduring projects.
