Ogun HOS Preaches Selflessness Ahead of Armed Forces Remembrance

Ogun State Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barrister Yusuph Olaniyonu have implored Nigerians to always be their brothers' keeper, spare a thought and when necessary, and bend back to provide a shoulder for fellow compatriots to lean on.

Both were speaking in Abeokuta ahead of the annual Armed Forces Remembrance week, when they decorated permanent secretaries and officers of the ministry with the 2014 Armed Forces Remembrance emblem.

According to Mrs. Adekunle, Nigerians need to do everything within their capacity to help one another, as the essence of the emblem launch is to give a sense of belonging to the dependants of the fallen heroes by raising funds for their welfare.

'Remembrance Day is usually celebrated on 15th January of every year; and the sale of the emblem is going on,' he said.

'The decoration you see is not for free. We give a token for the maintenance and upkeep of their children and families. We keep remembering our fallen heroes from time to time. As you know, it is not a one-off thing; and for this year, the permanent secretaries decided to come together to support the cause'.

Speaking in similar vein, Olaniyonu said the call became imperative at a time that the country is remembering fallen heroes who fought gallantly to ensure Nigeria's unity, recalling that some of them were injured, while some had to pay the supreme price in the process.

The commissioner noted that these heroes left behind wives, children and other dependants whose welfare must be taken care of at times as a token of the appreciation of the sacrifices of their breadwinners.

He therefore enjoined officers of the ministry, public-spirited individuals and corporate bodies to donate generously to the emblem launch, which was partly meant to ensure the upkeep of such dependants.
