Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Governor of Edo State, and Ambassador Dapo Fafowora are among the top echelon that will grace the '2010 Lions Day with the United Nations celebration.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the International Association of Lions Club, Multiple District 404 Nigeria, Lion Tunji Oni, said Lions all over the world uniquely observe the month of March. 'Each country has different ways to celebrate the occasion.'

According to him, in 1945, the UN chapter was drafted in San Francisco. That same year they drafted the Non-Government Organisation (NGO) chapter, which the Lions played a prominent role while drafting the chapter.

'Since 1978, the Lion International has been celebrating this day (Lions with the UN) at the UN headquarters in New York. Lion International is the only service club that has this privilege of going to the headquarters of the UN in New York to celebrate Lion's Day with the UN.'

The event, with theme: 'Contemporary Transnational Threats to Global Peace' will take place on Friday, March 12, 2010 at Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos.

Oni noted that Lionism started in 1917 by Melvin Jones and was formed in Nigeria in 1965 by Sir Akintola Williams.
