Enugu Magistrate court sentences man, 30 to prison

An Enugu Magistrates' Court on Monday sentenced one Chukwu Umah 30, of Enugu North Local Government Area to two years imprisonment with hard labour for theft.

Umah was sentenced for stealing money and property belonging to one Chinwe Uzougwu.

The police prosecutor, ASP Emmanuel Ajogwu, said the matter was reported to Ogui Police Station on Oct. 28, 2013.

Ajogwu told the court that the accused stole various items belonging to Uzougwu.

He listed the items to include a wallet, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Identification Card, First Bank Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card, Catholic pamphlet, University of Nigerian medical report and N3,000 cash.

He said the offence was punishable under Section 353(L) of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Vol. II Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

The accused pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy, saying that he had a wife and a child.

The Magistrate, Mrs Matter Onuora, accepted his plea and sentenced him to two years in prison with hard labour.
