Let’s work together for peace to prevail – Abatemi-Usman

By Michael Jegede

Vice chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman, has called on Nigerians to work together for the entrenchment of peace and unity in Nigeria.

Abatemi-Usman, who made the call in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Michael Jegede, to congratulate Muslim faithful on the celebration of Eid-El-Kabir, said it is only when peace is allowed to prevail that there can be meaningful growth and development in a country.

“I congratulate my fellow brothers and sisters of the Muslim faith as we mark this year's Eid-El-Kabir. Let us continue to conduct ourselves properly in line with the teachings of Islam, which emphasized the need for us to always give peace a chance in all that we do. I call on us as Nigerians to work together in order to allow peace to prevail in our dear country. We must eschew every form of bitterness and hostility amongst ourselves as people of one nation. The only way we can create an avenue for significant progress in the overall advancement of Nigeria is for all of us to agree to embrace peace, regardless of our ethnic, religious, cultural and political affiliations,” Abatemi-Usman noted in the statement.

The Senator, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, pointed out that the proposed national conference for which an advisory committee had already been constituted by President Goodluck Jonathan will afford Nigerians the opportunity to vent their views on the numerous problems bedeviling the country.

Describing the action of the President as a welcome development, Abatemi-Usman said: “I think the President must be commended for succumbing to pressure from Nigerians on the need for a national conference to chart the way forward for our beloved country. No doubt, as a nation we are confronted with too many problems. And one of the ways of tackling these shortcomings is to create a platform for the people to come together to discuss and proffer possible solutions.”
