SECRETARY-GENERAL ‘RELIEVED' BY PRIME MINISTER'S RELEASE IN LIBYA, REITERATES CONDEMNATION OF ABDUCTION

NEW YORK, October 11, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:


The Secretary-General is relieved by the release of Prime Minister Ali Zeidan of Libya and emphasizes his continued support to the Government of Libya. He reiterates his condemnation of the Prime Minister's abduction.


Libya is facing a deteriorating security situation and increasing acts of violence. The Secretary-General calls on all Libyan parties and the Libyan people to form consensus around national priorities and work towards building a strong, stable country, respectful of the rule of law and the protection of human rights.


The Secretary-General reiterates the support of the United Nations for the Libyan people as they aspire to establish a democratic State and move forward the political transformation of their country. He calls on the international community to provide assistance and support to the people of Libya in this process.
