Harper Government provides emergency assistance to those affected by flooding in Malawi

OTTAWA, Canada, February 20, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Canada is responding with immediate lifesaving assistance, including temporary shelter, medical support, and the distribution of non-food items, for approximately 16,000 people affected by flooding in Malawi, the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, announced today.

"Our Governement is providing immediate lifesaving assistance to the thousands affected by severe flooding," said Minister Fantino. "Through Canada's response, we are meeting the needs of the most vulnerable."

Flash floods due to heavy rains and storms in many parts of Malawi have caused deaths, injuries, and the destruction of infrastructure, including roads and schools. Many houses have been damaged or destroyed, along with crops and livestock. Displaced families are staying in makeshift camps. Canada, through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, will help the Malawi Red Cross Society deliver immediate assistance over the next three months.

The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation in Malawi to ensure humanitarian needs are met and to provide further assistance if required.
