SAN FRANCISCO, January 27, (THEWILL) – A gang of gun-wielding young men, Sunday, kidnapped a university lecturer, Professor Abednego Ekoko, on his way from Saint Paul's Anglican Church at Uzere, Isoko South Council Area of Delta State.

Ekoko, who is the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku and a former acting Vice Chancellor of the Delta State University, Abraka, was said to have been seized by the gunmen while leaving the church premises.

Though details of the incident were still sketchy as at the time of filling the report, a police source who confirmed the incident said Ekoko was ambushed by his captors who took him away in an unmarked car.

The source said Professor Ekoko's whereabout is still unknown as no contact has been made with his immediate family by the kidnappers.

It was not also clear whether the professor's kidnap is related to the crisis in the town as Uzere had been torn into two camps with two traditional rulers laying claims to power.

Some traditional and political leaders in the community are in support of one of the monarchs, while the others had thrown their weight behind the other monarch who also enjoys the backing of the state government.
