RSHA Red Carpet 2012 Award: Rivers ACN Dubs Lawmakers As Insensitive Bunch
The Rivers State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN says the Red Carpet Grand Award to former and current members of the Rivers State by the State House of Assembly could be likened to one chasing rats while one's house is on fire.
The ACN in a statement issued and signed by its publicity secretary, Jerry Needam said while the idea of recognizing and appreciating those who had put in their best in service of our fatherland is good, the event was to say the least ill-timed.
The ACN spokesman, Jerry Needam noted with dismay that the lawmakers could proceed with such an important event when half of the state was about to be swallowed by ravaging flood.
This, to the party amounts to grave insensitivity and irresponsibility by those who claim they represent the people in government, describing them as a bunch of uncaring self seeking politicians.
More glaringly embarrassing, the party pointed out was the active participation of legislators from even the flood over-run areas of Ahoada and Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Areas of the State.
“This is an eloquent proof that the so called legislators hardly understand why they are in government. They are only there to fend for themselves and their families. Yet these are the same people that will turn around to be recognized and appreciated for selfless service while they served”, the ACN regretted.
For this kind of recognition, and award to make sense and command respect within and outside, Jerry Needam observed, it has to be merited and well deserved in the context of championing the rights and interests of the electorate through sound legislations, oversight functions and rooting for people oriented projects for the overall infrastructural and human capital development of the State.
Such award must be devoid of politicization as represented by the just concluded Red Carpet 2012 Award meant and doled out only to PDP chieftains and their surrogates”, the ACN concluded.
