Focus on Nollywood’s All-time Best Movies

These movies are hot picks any day despite the short life span of most Nollywood movies. These movies to an extent transformed the industry. They also made many actors and actress. Check out the stars they made and the brains behind the black busters.

Living in Bondage: This is the flick that started what is known today as Nollywood. Produced by Kenneth Nebue of Nek Video Link, Living in Bondage was conceived at a time Nigerians were getting tired of the cinema culture. The need to replace that precipitated the flick that produced Kenneth Okonkwo (Andy Okeke), Okey Ogungiofor (Paulo) and Dan Oluigbo (Chief Priest).

Nneka The Pretty Serpent: When it became apparent that Nigerians were yearning for home video entertainment, Gab Onyi of Gabosky films keyed in with a block buster titled “Nneka The Pretty serpent.” It was the flick that brought Ndidi Obi to consciousness. It was a commercial success which spawned millions of naira in profit.

Battle of Musanga: This flick opened the lid on epic stories in Nollywood produced by Gab Onyi of Gabosky Films, “Battle of Musanga” which dramatized the unfolding days before the white men set foot in Africa brought Obi Madubuogwu who played king of Musanga to limelight.

Igodo: Igodo was a successful attempt in all respects. The flick produced by Ojiofor Ezeanyeche of O.J. productions set another standard for Epie productions on the cast list are talented artistes like Pete Edochie, Charles Okafor and Tom Njemanze. Owing to the high drama and technical quality, Igodo reportedly clinched over five awards after its release.

Domitilla: This is the first Nollywood movie that explored media hype as a veritable showbiz tool. Produced by Peter Ked Ejiro in collaboration with Zeb Ejiro, 'Domitilla' is the flick that boosted the image of Ann Njemanze and remains the best Nollywood movie to treat prostitution.

Violated: It is one of the classical romance movies to rock our psyche in Nollywood. Produced by Ego Boyo and featuring Richard Mofe Damijo (both of whom had earned popularity in the Soap Checkmate) Violated redefined the concept of romance which shortly after became Nolywood's hallmark.

Fugitive: This is another movie from the Stable of Nek Videolink. It is almost the launching pad of such actresses as Genevieve Nnaji and Rita Dominic. Sales figures indicate that the flick did so well in the market.

When The Sun Sets: This is the first film to appear from the stables of Hints entertainment. It projected the likes of Kate Henshaw and Clem Ohameze.

Rattle Snake: Produced by Amaka Igwe, the frenzy created by this movie still lives on. A contemporary story with pockets of humour, that is the movie that projected Nkem Owoh as Osuofia. Rattle Snake' is probably one movie that had continued to have shelf value.

The Prostitute: This is a 2001 movie that took nudity to a commercial high point in Nollywood. Pairing the duo of Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Segun Arinze. The movie produced by Kingsley Ogoro beamed Omotola nude by exploring the double body filming technique and made millions of naira as profit.

Outcast: When it seemed that Nudity was selling, famous director, Chico Ejiro, keyed in with 'Outcast'. And incidentally, that is the movie that gave Shan George the ultimate break after she posed almost nude for the movie jackets and posters.

Conspiracy 1, 2 & 3: This movie is unique because it is one of the home video productions to peak artistes' fees at a mouth watering level. To have Onyeka Onwenu on the set cost the producers three hundred and fifty thousand naira, a huge amount as artiste's fee then.

Osuafia in London: This is another block buster effort from Kingsley Ogoro. 'Osuofia in London' is unique in two ways. It took Nkem Owoh's antics beyond the borders of Nigeria and also made way for trans Atlantic productions. No gainsaying that at was a commercial success and remains one of the most sold home videos in Nigeria.

Aki Na Ukwa: This is a low budget movie directed by Amayo Uzo-Philip but the commercial success after it hit the shelves made all the partners in the flick have a rethink. It is the movie that brought the diminutive duo Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme to limelight.
