Reconstruction: Margaret Ekpo International Airport Ready July 8

CALABAR, June 30, (THEWILL) - The contractor handling the renovation of the Margaret Ekpo International Airport has reaffirmed his company’s commitment towards completing work on or before July 8, 2011.


The Contractor, Barr. Asuquo Akawan gave the assurance when members of the ad-hoc Committee set up yesterday by the House to ascertain the extent of work at the Airport visited the site today.

Barr. Akawan assured members led by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Itaya Asuquo Nyong that with a clement weather, the renovation work will be completed on schedule.

Also speaking on site, the Managing Director of JAMEON Nig. Ltd. the contracting firm, Engineer Jude Nwachukwu said the poor weather has constituted a major constraint to the progress of work at the site.

Engineer Nwachukwu who disclosed that the contract was signed on 30th November, 2010 and the contractor mobilized to site on May 2011 assured that the July 8 deadline was feasible.

The Deputy Speaker, RT. Hon. Nyong who was at the head of a Six-Man committee of the House enjoined the contractor to complete and deliver the job on schedule.

Rt. Hon. Nyong, who said the absence of a functional Airport was impacting negatively on tourism and other businesses operating in the State, called on the firm to speed up action on the work at the site as the importance of a functioning Airport to the socio-economic life of Calabar cannot be over emphasized.

Contract for the renovation of the Margaret Ekpo International Airport was awarded to JAMEON Nig. Ltd. in November 2010 for the sum of N832 Million and was to be completed within 8 weeks.
