APGA GUBER CANDIDATE'S VEHICLES RAM INTO EBONYI GOV'S CONVOY

Occupants of five vehicles belonging to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate, Ebonyi State, were yesterday arrested for ramming into Governor Martin Elechi's convoy at Emene along Enugu-Abakaliki Highway.

According to the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Onyekachi Eni, the vehicles in the convoy of the APGA governorship candidate, Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu were on the way to Enugu when they attempted to overtake the governor's convoy.

He disclosed that the security details of Governor Elechi, however, managed to stop Ogbuewu's men around the Airport junction and arrested the occupants who were later taken the police area command, Enugu, on the orders of Ebonyi State Police Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Ayeni, who was briefed of the incident at the instance of Governor Elechi.

Eni stated that the security details were only restrained from taking the necessary and normal action of opening fire on Ogbuewu's convoy by the calming influence and peaceful disposition of the governor. 'Ogbuewu and his convoy dangerously swerved left and right in the attempt to overtake the governor's convoy at all cost, a dangerous development that would have involved the governor in a serious accident in addition to the danger the situation put other road users.'

He said the incident was one of the many acts of provocation by the opposition political parties in the state, 'especially APGA that has been labouring to foist a climate of instability in the state ahead of April elections.'

However the APGA governorship candidate expressed disappointment that government took a minor incident seriously.

He explained that though his convoy had a minor brush with that of Governor Elechi along Enugu-Abakaliki Highway, as he was rushing to Enugu Airport to board his flight to Abuja when unknowingly his convoy ran into the governor's convoy and when his convoy realized it was the governor's convoy other vehicles behind him retreated and both continued their journey to Enugu Airport where they exchanged pleasantries and flew in the same aircraft to Abuja.

Ogbuewu blamed the whole thing on the over-zealousness of the security details of the governor for making the incident look serious.
