ABUJA, Jan 01, (THEWILL) - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole has urged Nigerians to embrace peace in the new year in order to ensure the sustenance of Nigeria’s democratic gains.

Bankole said it was remarkable that Nigeria's democracy has gone through a decade of experiments that have produced promising gains for tomorrow, noting that 2011 was an election year for Nigeria and that the New Year resolution of every Nigerian should be to work for the peace and progress of the nation especial at this time of another political transition.

Bankole in a New Year message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Bakare said the political leaders in particular must be just and fair to all concern in order to avoid strife and violence during the elections, just as he cautioned politicians to desist from incisive actions and comments that are capable of creating crisis.

"There is the need for us to more than ever before resolve in the new year to allow our actions and conducts to be guided by the desire for peace, he said adding that, "If our motivation in politics is for service to our people and country, we can not afford to engage in politics of attrition and violence of which the same people we seek to serve would be the ultimate casualties."

"It is pertinent for leaders especially political leadership across party line to see the new year as a defining moment for our country in our transitory journey to a deepened democracy, Bankole added.
