As ABU Students Nab Serial Rapist Babangida, Nigerians are set to Nab Serial Democratic Rapist IBB
I read with rapt attention the arrest of Ibrahim Babangida, a water vendor who used to sneak into the women's hostels of the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, to rape and rob unsuspecting female students while disguised as a woman. Babangida was said to be a member of a notorious gang of robbers and rapists that had made life unbearable for the female students in the university campus.
Like Ibrahim Babangida the serial rapist, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has repeatedly raped our democratic process. Nigerians need to rise up and stop him from winning the 2011 presidential election. Nigeria is better than IBB. For all of his bravado, General Babangida is a vicious, ignorant, camouflage, divisive, pathetic figure. This man has made life more than unbearable for millions of Nigerians and single handedly destroyed all that Nigeria stood for.
IBB is a provocateur who likes to play with matches in the tinderbox of national and ethnic confrontation. He seems oblivious to the real danger of his execrable behavior. He is an integral part of the vicious effort by the military industrial complex and other elements of the unpatriotic and corrupt wing of our country to undemocratically foist themselves on Nigerians even if it means annulling the most credible election in our nation's history. Facts and reality mean nothing to IBB. And there is no road too low for him to slither upon.
Like his Machiavellian style of rule - killing of the innocent when he attempted to take the rein of government and when he illegally took power, he is stoking sectional sentiment in the name of zoning to wrest power come 2011. Babangida is aware that there is a great deal of hatred and bigotry in this country, which does not define the country. He is the reason why peace relocated from Plateau state and he is now using the likes of Raymond Dokpesi in the name of 2011 presidential elections to set in motion a possible disintegration of our nation.
But I worry about the potential for violence that grows out of unrestrained, hostile statements and actions. We've seen it too often. For decades IBB and his fellow travelers have peddled fear, ignorance and divisiveness. All you have to do is look around to see what it has done to the country. The greatest economic inequality since our nation's independence was followed by a near-total collapse of the overall economy. As a country, we have a monumental mess on our hands and still these old hands have nothing to offer in the way of remedy except corruption and that is bad for our country.
Come January 2011 Nigerians should come out and finally nab this democratic rapist and send him back to his hilltop villa in Minna for good.
