EKITI STUDENTS DISOWN PLANNED PROTEST ...PETITION POLICE, SSS

By Lere Olayinka

The Federation of Ekiti State Students Union (FESSU) has dissociated itself from the planned protest by some groups over the alleged increase in tuition fee of fresh students in the state tertiary institutions, adding that a letter had already been sent to the State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to alert them on the intent of those behind the purported protest.

.
Speaking while leading a delegation of the student body on a courtesy visit to the State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni in Ado Ekiti, the union President, Mr. Asefon Sunday said the Oni administration has demonstrated an unequal passion for education in the state and should not be rubbished by any politically motivated protest.

While explaining that the groups planning the protest are unregistered, he said the union was poised to stop any group who may want to cause mayhem in the state.

Asefon noted that the peace of the state is paramount to all the student union bodies in the state.

He commended the governor on the giant strides taken in the education sector so far describing the provision of laptops for all entrants into the Senior Secondary schools in all government boarding schools, the provision of furniture for all public schools and the introduction of scholarship scheme in the state as landmark achievements.

In his reaction, Governor Oni said FESSU should help in checkmating the spread of miscreants in the school system noting that some politicians are using students to foment trouble in the state.

He said that most youths who are used by politicians to perpetrate evils are idle hands who have no vision for academic excellence.

Governor Oni opined that the union would justify its existence by ensuring that bad eggs are flushed out of the school system, noting that government would not be pleased to have serious-minded students infected by the increasing activities of the miscreants.

“We will not encourage thuggery. Once any young person is ready to make his life great, government would always be there to ensure he realises his dreams. People should work for success. Those using these students are destroying their futures. They are destroying the future of the upcoming generations.”

He assured that his administration would further recruit a sizeable number of qualified applicants into the state civil service this year in a bid to ensure that the youths are engaged in productive activities .
