FG approves N124b for Apapa-Oshodi, Enugu-PH, other roads' rehabilitation

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) Wednesday approved N124 billion for rehabilitation of some artery roads spread across some parts of the country.

Information Minister, Labaran Maku, alongside his Power, Works and Transport counterparts, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Mike Onolememen and Senator Idris Umar, briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan with Vice President Namadi Sambo in attendance.

Key among the roads approved for rehabilitation are the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki -Ojota Carriageway aimed at easing the traffic congestion always experienced by users of the roads which serve as important gateways to Lagos, other parts of the country and neighbouring West African countries.

Works Minister said: 'After deliberations, the council approved reconstruction of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway Section 2 Phase 11: Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki-Ojota Expressway Carriageway and service lanes in favour of Messrs Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in the sum of N14,989,647,635.65 with a completion period of 15 months.

'Also approved were the rehabilitation of the Mokwa-Bida Road in Niger State; Akure-Ilesa Road and the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway.'

According to Onolememen: 'After deliberations, the council approved the award of contract for Lot C: Rehabilitation of Mokwa-Bida Road in favour of Messrs Triacta (Nigeria) Limited, in the sum of N10.9 billon with a completion period of 24 months.

'The council also approved the award of contract for Lot D: Rehabilitation of Akure-Ilesha Road in favour of Messrs Kopek Construction Limited, in the sum of N7.3 billion with a completion period of 21 months.

'The Council approved the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Enugu-Port Harcourt Dual carriageway Section 1: Lokpanta-Umuahia Tower (Km 61+000 – Km 120+500) in Abia State in favour of Messrs Setraco (Nigeria) Limited, in the sum of N39.5 billon with a completion period of 40 months.

'The FEC also approved the Enugu-Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway Section II: Umuahia Tower-Aba Township Rail/Road Bridge Crosdinh (Km 120+500-Km176+600) in Abia State in favour of Messrs Arab Contractors O. A. O. (Nigeria) Limited, in the sum of N50.8 billon with a completion period of 40 months.

'The Council gave the approvals based on the importance of the roads to the national economy', he added.
