SAN FRANCISCO, April 07, (THEWILL) – Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has urged militia groups in the country to lay down their arms and take advantage of the window of the peace initiative being put together by the Federal Government.

"Armed groups in the country should take the full advantage of the window of opportunity of a peace deal being put together by the Federal Government to negotiate for a peaceful conflict resolution,"he said.

Atiku made the call while reacting to the weekend attack on the private residence of the Adamawa State deputy governor by some armed men.

The Turaki Adamawa, who made the appeal in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja, noted that the attack on the residence of the deputy governor of Adamawa State and the massacre of policemen in Bayelsa State, are two incidents that portend grave consequences for the country.

While maintaining that aggrieved members of any society have the right to express their grievances, he said taking up arms and killing other citizens is the most bizarre way of expressing such grievances.

He noted that no government can condone such a recourse to impunity as it undermines national stability and cohesion.
