NANS, Vital Ally In The Fight Against Corruption - Lamorde
SAN FRANCISCO, February 22, (THEWILL) - Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde says students and youth organizations across the country are important ally in the anti-graft war.
Lamorde made the remark while receiving a delegation from the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, led by the National President, Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, during a visit to the Commission’s headquarters, Abuja on Thursday February 21, 2013.
While thanking the students for their visit, the EFCC boss decried the level of corruption in public sector and the involvement of youths in internet fraud, which he says fuels cultism and sexual harassment in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
He commended the students’ passion for change in the country and admonished them to be vigilante and not allow themselves be used to promote causes that are inimical to the good of society
He further urged the students to use their offices across the states to help EFCC by serving as whistle blowers.
Lamorde equally expressed his displeasure with the rate of corruption in the campuses, assuring that the agency will not ignore any case of graft that come to its knowledge in the institutions.
Earlier, Comrade Gbadebo said they were in the Commission not only to appreciate what Lamorde and EFCC are doing but to also lend support to the fight against economic crime and corruption.
“In as much as we appreciate the EFCC, we believe there is more that needs to be done especially now that lots of scams are being uncovered like the police pension, subsidy scams, among others; and in identifying with you, we are identifying with the things you have done in the past and present,” he said.
Gbadebo stressed his association’s willingness to support EFCC especially in exposing corrupt practices, saying that it is the only way the future of the nation and its teeming youths can be guaranteed.
“Forming a synergy with EFCC will go a long way in exposing a lot of corrupt practices that are happening all over the country, most importantly in the universities. Rectors are embezzling money; Vice Chancellors are bringing obnoxious fees which cannot be accounted for”, he declared.
He pleaded with the EFCC to look into the issue of Post-Jamb and sundry fees being imposed on students in tertiary institutions.
The NANS president was accompanied on the visit by a 29 - man delegation, which included some former officials of the association.
