Manchester United: Mourinho says 3-1 win over Northampton Town win was “positive performance”

It's too soon to tell whether Jose Mourinho's Manchester United is back on track, but the Red Devils took several steps in the right direction on Wednesday.

United beat Northampton Town 3-1 on the road to advance to the EFL Cup's fourth round, with Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera each picking up a goal and an assist.

Michael Carrick also scored and had a pretty steady day in the center of the park, which United controlled with relative ease.

“As a team we had control from the beginning. I think the substitutions were just a contribution and, overall, the team was completely in control. The game could and should have been easier, because normally it is easier against 10 men – we should have been playing against 10 men very early in the second half. But they fought and they played with their strength. They tried to cause us problems, which they did at times, so it was a difficult match but overall it was a positive performance.”

The non-red card in question was when Jak McCourt clattered into Memphis Depay with the score knotted at 1 in the second half.
